Cod is the default. If someone in Coulsdon says they are getting fish and chips from Salt & Vinegar, they usually mean a battered cod and chips, salt and vinegar, maybe mushy peas. The shop lists a small at £9.50 and a large at £11.50. Haddock is the other white fish at the large-cod price. Plaice and rock salmon sit at £9.50 with the small cod.
The photograph is an example of the dish. It is not this counter’s portion, and the paper in the picture is not their wrapping. Size on a plate in a stock photo is not a size on the board. Ask for small or large in those words.
Small or large
Two pounds separates the two cods. That is the whole published difference. This page does not invent a gram weight, a fillet length, or a “better value” calculation. If you are feeding one adult and you want a full supper, large is the one people point at. If you want less fish, or you are splitting chips, small is on the board for that. Kids who want fish rather than nuggets are often better on the kids’ boxes than on a small cod, because those boxes already include chips at £5.50 or £6.00.
Chips are separate. They start at £3.00. A large cod does not automatically include a named chip size on the public list, so say chips as their own line. Mushy peas £2.00. Curry sauce £2.40. A pickled onion £1.00 if you want the sharp thing on the side.
How it is cooked, on this listing
The shop’s published pitch is cooked to order, not held under lamps. That matters more on a Friday than on a Tuesday, because you wait. Phone 020 8660 6990 from the street if you do not want to stand in the shop while the batter sets. Collection is from 85 Stoats Nest Rd, Coulsdon CR5 2JJ. Monday to Saturday 12:00–21:45. Sunday no cod, because Sunday there is no shop.
Cod roe is listed separately at £3.50. It is not a third size of cod. Seven king bites are £9.50, which is a different shape of fish for someone who does not want a whole fillet. Those sit on the other fish page.
Prices move. The counter wins. This is an independent guide. It does not fry the fish and it does not take the money. If you need the large-cod price confirmed for a table of six, phone first rather than multiplying a figure you saw on a search result last month.
